How to write a resolution
A resolution is basically divided into three parts:
I. The heading
II. The preamble clauses
III. The operative clauses
I. The heading consists of four parts which need to be filled in before you give your resolution to the Approval Panel:
Forum (your committee/council), Question of (the topic), Submitter and Co-Submitter (in an alphabetical order).
II. The preamble clauses are starting with the number of your committee/council in capital letters.
Then, you start with your first preamble clause. First, you pick a preamble phrase (annexed). They need to be written in italic letters. Preamble clauses are clauses in which you state, e.g. what actions have been taken; you refer to the UN Charter or general facts about the discussed topic. You end each preamble clause with a comma.
III. In the operative clauses you exactly state what needs to be done. Therefore, you start with an operative phrase (annexed). They are written in bold letters further, the operative clauses are numbered. If you want to write a sub-clause you have to start a new paragraph. Sub-clauses are numbered with letters ((a), (b), (c)). The sub-sub-clauses are numbered with Roman numbers ((i), (ii), (iii)).
After every operative clause you have to make a semicolon to show that that the clause has ended.
A resolution ends with a dot.
Do not forget enumerate every line. The numbers have to be written in brackets. Further, the numbers of the pages have to be written down (“page 1 of x”).
